Do You Need a Permit for an EV Charger?
Yes. Piedmont requires a permit for any Level 2 EV charger installation. This includes adding a new 240V circuit or upgrading your panel to handle the extra load.
After the work is complete, a city inspector must approve the installation before final sign-off.
Residential EV Charger Requirements
Most home chargers are Level 2 (240V) units. A permit is required if:
- You’re adding a new 240V outlet
- You’re upgrading your panel
- You’re hardwiring the charger

Commercial EV Charger Requirements
